I am escorted into a pale-yellow room. There are no pictures on the walls, nothing but a sterile space.

I can feel the echoes from the many last goodbyes this room has undoubtably seen.

Paul’s lifeless body is covered from the neck down by a white sheet.

The staff have cleaned him up as best they can, but apart from the pale color of his skin he could be sleeping.

Biting the inside of my cheek and holding my breath does nothing to halt the flow of my tears.

Pulling the stool over to the bed, I sit, then move the sheet just enough to hold Paul’s hand. Lifting his palm to my cheek, he is cold to the touch, another reminder Paul won’t be coming home.

“Why did you do it, Paul?” I hear anger in my voice. “Why didn’t you trust me to help you?” I am asking questions that will never be answered. “How could I not know things were this bad?” Tears fall down my cheeks. “I’d have laid down my life for you if you’d only asked me.”

Looking up to the bright lights, I hold my breath and squeeze my eyes tight shut, trying to regain a semblance of control.

“You’re more than my partner, Paul. More than my best friend. You’re my brother. Like you always say, we don’t share the same DNA, but we share a bond stronger than blood.” My words come out as sobs. “Even in death, our friendship will never end. You were my strength when I needed it, I only wish I could have been yours too. No other partner will ever be good enough to fill your shoes.”

I kiss Paul’s hand, then carefully set it down back under the sheet. Straightening the covers over his body, I close my eyes once more as memories of the good times flood back to me.

Standing above my partner’s body, I bend down and place my lips on his forehead. Then I stand straight, proud, ready to say my goodbye to one of the best men I ever knew. Tears cloud my vision, but I had to speak my truth before leaving him.

“Paul, wherever you are, I hope Jane is with you, and together you find peace for eternity. I’ll never forget you. I love you, brother.”
